Kim receives paper award
Hyo Soo Kim, a PhD student working with Dr. Tony Schmitz, received the NAMRI/SME Outstanding Paper Finalist award for his paper entitled "Novel heterodyne displacement measuring interferometer" co-authored with Dr. Schmitz. The paper was presented at the 37th North American Manufacturing Research Conference held in Greenville, SC from May 19-22, 2009.
MTRC to offer new Advanced Manufacturing Certificate
This certificate program is designed for manufacturing professionals and students interested in modern advanced manufacturing techniques. The one-year program is offered through UF EDGE (Electronic Delivery of Graduate Engineering) and is composed of a three course sequence offered annually in the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. These courses cover traditional manufacturing processes, such as forming, machining, and welding; nontraditional manufacturing processes; and important engineering topics such as linear vibrations, modal analysis, and linear controls.
Applications for Fall 2009 may be completed at:

Springer has released the new textbook Machining Dynamics: From Frequency Response to Improved Productivity, co-authored by Tony Schmitz and K. Scott Smith (UNCC). The purpose of the book is to train engineers and students in the practical application of machining dynamics, with a particular focus on milling. It is arranged such that the steps required to improve machining productivity through chatter avoidance and reduced surface location error (forced vibrations resulting in part geometric errors) are clearly evident. The following topics are covered in detail:
